The Wapello County Historical Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce its campus’ new name: Iowa Heartland History Connection. In early 2020, the Wapello County Historical Society Board of Directors unanimously approved the purchase of a new campus and now has a new name that reflects its new location and expanded efforts in serving the communities of southeast Iowa.
WCHS Board President Tom Leinhauser noted, “The new name gives us a fresh start in our new campus and represents our focus on being a regional historical and cultural leader. From school groups, vacationers, and members of the community, they are going to find an amazing experience and see just how connected we are to history and our communities.”
As a result of board discussions and planning, the private non-profit organization saw the necessity for a new campus allowing better visitor access and experience, as well as greater archival storage and research services, became quite apparent. The new campus provides the infrastructure for achieving those goals while also allowing for future growth. The campus includes three areas of service; the Iowa Heartland History Museum, Iowa Heartland Research & Archive Center, and Iowa Heartland Event Center.
Accompanying the new name and organizational changes, the Iowa Heartland History Museum exhibits have been built from the ground up. The Grand Opening was celebrated on April 30, 2022 with a ribbon cutting and lots of excitement.
Erin Naylor, Director, notes, “I couldn’t be more thrilled with how everything came together. We had a great turnout for the Grand Opening event and already had our first school tour. There is so much enthusiasm from the community and we can’t wait to keep building from here. Our team of dedicated volunteers, staff, board members, and local contractors should be proud of what they have achieved.”
